Legislative Update

SB28 (Enter a PA Compact) was introduced in January and referred to the Senate Health Committee in February.  It is scheduled for Sponsor Testimony by Senator Roegner on March 1.

Here is a link to S.B. 28

You do not currently need to do anything until further testimony is scheduled.  OAPA will let you know when it will be important to contact your legislators.

Program Spotlight - Mercy College

Mercy College of Ohio’s Master of Physician Assistant Studies Program is the newest addition to Mercy College’s rich history. The very first PA student cohort of 25 students launched in May 2021. As of now, there are currently two student cohorts, with the third beginning this upcoming May. Mercy offers small cohort sizes, an active PA student society, and clinical experience within the Bon Secours Mercy Health hospital system. The inaugural cohort received their white coats this summer and have recently begun their clinical rotations. When asked about the transition from didactic to clinical year, students acknowledged some nervousness, but also excitement to gain hands-on clinical experience. Lauren Ballard PA-S2, Class of 2023 states that she has “had the chance to gain excellent hands-on experience, observe patients that were critically ill, and assist in treatment of patients that needed life-saving interventions.” These sentiments were echoed by fellow second year classmate Justin Weibel PA-S2 who said he felt “ahead or on the same level as many of the medical students” he has collaborated with so far on rotations. Many members of the class of 2024, myself included, are certainly anxious as we near the end of the didactic year but also are looking forward to furthering our PA education during clinical year.

Here at Mercy College of Ohio, we strive to engage with our community through a variety of volunteer opportunities. When asked about their favorite volunteer opportunities thus far, the Community Care Clinic was by far the most popular response amongst students. Mercy College of Ohio PA students have the opportunity to participate in the Community Care Clinic where students provide free health service to the underserved members of the community. Students stated that this is an excellent way to gain clinical experience, integrate knowledge from the classroom to clinical practice, and to help those in need. Additionally, for the past two years now, SAAAPA members have organized fundraisers to help pay for AAPA conference expenses to allow students to attend. These fundraisers have ranged from a sneaker drive to Chipotle fundraising events.

Program Spotlight - Ohio Dominican University

When Ohio Dominican University started their PA program in 2012 it was the only program in Central Ohio to offer a Master of Science degree in Physician Assistant Studies. 10 years later ODU graduated its 9th cohort with 49 students receiving their long white coats. Many of the graduates have already accepted job offers in Dermatology, Acute Care Fellowship, Emergency Medicine, Orthopedic Surgery, Surgical ICU, Neurosurgery, Trauma, Internal Medicine, and Primary Care. The most common placements for the class of 2022 were Mid-Ohio Emergency Services (MOES), Kettering Health Systems, OhioHealth, University of Pittsburgh, Ohio State, Riverside, Doctor’s Hospital, and Baptist Health (Kentucky). Though PANCE pass rates have not been released for cohort 9, the cohort 8 boasted a 98% pass rate.

All 50 students from cohort 10, who entered the program in August of 2021, began their first of 12 clinical rotations in January. Cohort 11 has begun their second semester of didactic taking challenging courses such as clinical medicine and pharmacology. Many of the students in cohort 12 have been selected, and we excitedly await when they will join us in August.

One of the major pillars of Ohio Dominican's PA Program is a commitment to service. With this in mind, service opportunities have been readily provided to students as well as built into the curriculum. Our students have volunteered at LifeTown Columbus, an innovated program to help students with disabilities learn important life skills, visited the Mohun Health Care Center, collected hygiene items to for the Run the Race Center, donated over 20 units of blood in partnership with the Red Cross, and written holiday cards to incarcerated individuals. With Covid-19 travel restrictions lifted, ODU PA students begun planning to return to the Dominican Republic on a medical missions trip to help individuals in need.

Students were thrilled to attend the PAlooza, a formal event for students, faculty, and their families this September for the first time since the pandemic began. Plans for the next PAlooza are already in the works. Students also enjoyed participating in the PA Olympics and look forward to competing again this year.

We are so thrilled by the performance of our graduated students, and by the promise of our current students. More than anything we are grateful to be a part of a program led by faculty who have worked hard to create wonderful opportunities for us and alumni who have been so beloved by the Columbus community that they have left big shoes for us to fill.

Telehealth Update

On Wednesday, February 8, the board voted to adopt new telehealth rules. Along with Ohio’s telehealth law in Sub. HB 122 (134th G.A.) (in particular R.C. 4743.09) which became effective on March 23, 2022, the rules expand telehealth for physicians (MD, DO, DPM), physician assistants, dietitians, respiratory care professionals and genetic counselors. The rules will go into effect on February 28, 2023.

Click here to read the adopted rules.
Click here to read R.C. 4743.09.

The standard of care for a telehealth visit must meet the standard of care for an in-person visit. If you intend to use telehealth in your practice, it is important that you review all rules and laws to ensure you remain in compliance. The board has also created a Telehealth Rules Document to highlight the changes that will be implemented.

As a reminder, the new telehealth rules govern practice in the state of Ohio, based on where the patient is located. The board has no jurisdiction over practice in another state.

If you have questions about the new rules, please emailcontact@med.ohio.gov.

Burnout and Compassion Fatigue Survey

My name is Sophia Gardner. I'm a senior at Warren High School and I'm conducting a research study for my AP Research class on the prevalence of burnout and compassion fatigue among rural primary care providers and providers in patient care. AP Research allows students like me to learn how to conduct our own research studies, a skill that's necessary both in and after college. Through my study, I aim to discover what variables make primary care providers more or less susceptible to burnout and/or compassion fatigue and how prevalent these two phenomena are.
