2023 OAPA Awards and Scholarships

Lauren Van Den Hout

One of the most rewarding activities for a membership community like OAPA is celebrating past and future member achievements by granting awards and scholarships. OAPA is pleased to share the news of the 2023 award and scholarship winners honored at last week’s OAPA Annual Conference in Columbus. Please view the full list of our honorees and join us in celebrating the accomplishments of these PA community leaders.

Spotlight: Hudson Award Winner, Beth Adamson

The Charles L. Hudson, MD Award, is being awarded this year to someone very special in OAPA. This honor is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Charles L. Hudson, an Ohio-based physician who is credited for presenting the original paper on the concepts for the utilization of non-physician practitioners in the delivery of primary care medicine to the American Medical Association in the early 1960’s.

The OAPA Board of Directors celebrates this year’s awardee for a quarter century of dedication, support, and leadership that has left a permanent mark on our organization. She has been a trusted source of information and assistance to our members and has made a significant impact in the area of government relations and advocacy for the PA profession.

As the OAPA moves through a pivotal staff leadership transition, the board extends deep gratitude for the awardee’s service to OAPA, making her supremely worthy of this honor. As such, the Charles L. Hudson Award is presented to none other than Beth Adamson, our long-serving Executive Director, whose tenure with OAPA has drawn to a close this month.

Congratulations, Beth, and thank you for your work in service to OAPA!

2023 Annual Conference Recap

On September 22-23, 2023, OAPA members convened in Columbus for another successful OAPA Annual Conference!

Featuring two days of educational programming and networking with fellow attendees and exhibitors, participants gained new knowledge and strengthened relationships within the PA community. Educational topics included varying content, from advocacy updates to orthopedics, burn management, and endocrinology. A student track and a focused workshop on EKG Review were offered on Saturday.

The conference evaluations included high ratings for presenters and the event, with high energy to lead OAPA into the planning period for the 2024 Annual Conference. Congratulations, and thank you to the 2023 Conference Committees and all presenters and participants!

PA Week Fast Approaching: October 6-12, 2023

Although OAPA celebrates and supports the work of Ohio’s PAs all year long, October 6-12 is officially “PA Week,” recognizing the PA profession and its contributions to the nation’s health. We ask our members to visit OAPA social media channels - Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn - during PA Week to like, share, and comment on our posts. Let’s flood the social media algorithms with good news to show our pride and build awareness of the PA profession. We also encourage members to visit the AAPA’s toolkit for PA Week - PAsGoBeyond!

Op-Ed: Michell McDiffett, PA-C, on the Patient Experience

Michell McDiffett

Americans are frustrated with the state of the healthcare system. They’re afraid that when they need medical care, it won’t be available or will cost too much. When they do receive care, many say providers don’t listen to them. These troubling findings from a recent survey by The Harris Poll should sound a deafening alarm bell for policymakers across the country, including here in Ohio. Dive into the survey results in this op-ed from Michell McDiffett with her perspective on how Ohio’s 5,700+ PAs can make a difference.

PA OlymPAcs Preview

Marietta Olympics

After a pandemic-induced hiatus, the PA OlymPAcs are back in action. Taking place on Saturday, October 14, at Ohio Dominican University, this track and field style event is an opportunity for PA students around the state of Ohio to gather together for fun, friendly competition, networking, and fundraising. This year’s proceeds will support the Ken Anderson Alliance and OAPA’s Legislative Fund. For more information, contact OAPA Student Representative Daniel Bixel at danbixel@gmail.com.

Student Research: Alex Strader, PA-S, on LGBTQ+-specific Health Education

As health practitioners, PAs can improve patient outcomes and the effectiveness of their practice by building cultural awareness and competency for working with patients of all identities. Ohio University PA student Alex Strader, PA-S, is an OAPA student member who is also involved with GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBTQ+ Equality. The OAPA community is invited to learn more about his research to date and participate in GLMA's ongoing survey to better assess the current state of LGBTQIA+ education in various health professions
