Advocacy In Action: OAPA and ODU Meet with State Legislators

The Ohio Association of Physician Assistants recently held meetings with State Representative Dontavius Jarrells and State Senator Hearcel F. Craig at Ohio Dominican University (ODU) to advocate for the physician assistant (PA) profession. The sessions, which took place in September and October, were strategically organized by Emma Whitsett, ODU's OAPA Student Representative, along with ODU PA Program Director Cameron Powell, PA-C. The discussions were also attended by OAPA President Matthew Freado, PA-C, and Immediate Past President Jennifer Marongoni, PA-C, and University Leadership, including ODU President Connie Gallaher and PA and Provost Director Shonna Riedlinger.

One of the primary goals of the meetings was to enlighten State Rep. Jarrells and State Senator Craig about PA education and the essential components of a high-quality curriculum. The representatives were thanked for supporting SB 28 and urged to prioritize its swift passage through the House. OAPA also discussed a potential PA Practice Enhancement Bill aimed at removing restrictions that hinder PAs from performing tasks such as moderate sedation, laser hair removal, and prescribing and monitoring weight loss medications. The formal authorization for PAs to issue a pink slip was another important topic discussed. Additionally, OAPA championed the elimination of 500 hours of direct supervision for new licensees, the NCCPA recertification mandate, and removing supervision agreements, all in line with Optimal Team Practice (OTP).

The meetings were not all talk, as Rep. Jarrells and Senator Craig observed ODU PA students engaging in various simulations. This allowed them to gain firsthand insight into the practical aspects of PA education. OAPA expressed optimism regarding the potential progress resulting from these meetings and pledged to provide updates on the outcomes. The association extends a special thank you to Rep. Jarrells, Senator Craig, and all the ODU students, faculty, and administrators for facilitating this valuable opportunity to advocate for the advancement of the PA profession.
