The Opioid Epidemic in Ohio
Presented by James (Jim) R. Smith, Ohio State Highway Patrol Crime Laboratory
Learning Objectives:
- Identify the opioid crisis in Ohio and what purpose the criminal lab plays seizure of drugs.
- Review what is being done to limit Opioid traffic throughout.
- Discuss the amount of opioids deaths are attributed to prescribing and street fentanyl.
Speaker Biography:
James R. Smith is a native of Stark County where he attended Massillon Perry High School. In 1994, he graduated from the Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Forensic Chemistry.
After a short time as a chemist at the Ohio Department of Agriculture, he began a twenty-plus year career as a Forensic Scientist at the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation in London, Ohio. While at BCI, he specialized in Drug Chemistry and Firearms Identification.
James is currently the Laboratory Systems Director at the Ohio State Highway Patrol Crime Laboratory in Columbus, Ohio. He resides in rural Logan County with his wife Stephanie.
