Pediatric Infections: Emergent Treatments
Presented by Jeff Sommers, PA-C, Cleveland Clinic Foundation - Mercy Hospital
Learning Objectives:
- Identify various viral pediatric illnesses and provide insight into most common age groups affected, symptoms, treatment, and potential complications associated with each.
- Identify bacterial pneumonia pathogens and current antibiotic guidelines.
- Outline current treatment guidelines for Otitis media/externa, including those with TM perforation and in place myringotomy tubes.
- Distinguish between viral and bacterial pharyngitis/ tonsilitis, identify potential complications of each, and provide standard treatment options.
- Discuss etiology, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of pediatric meningitis.
Speaker Biography:
Jeff Sommers has been a practicing physician assistant for 10 years after completion of the Masters of Physician Assistant Program at Marietta College. His entire career has been in emergency medicine with full time employment initially with Stark County Emergency Physicians and now Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital.
Jeff assumed the role of ED, Trauma, Stroke, and Observation APRN/PA manager for Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital in April of 2024. He is an active member of the ED Leadership Committee, Provider in Triage and Patient Throughput Committee, Observation Patient/ CDU Project, and is the ED PA Student Coordinator at Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital.
Outside of work, Jeff enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters, golfing, traveling to the beach, and various outdoor activities.
