Opioid Update: The Crisis in Ohio: What Prescribers Need to Know
Presented by Veronica Magda, PA-C, Cleveland Clinic
Learning Objectives:
- Identify how opioids can lead to addiction & how to screen for potential addiction.
- Describe how the COVID pandemic fueled the opioid epidemic & the current state of the opioid epidemic (Ohio versus the rest of the country).
- Discuss the appropriate use of opioids and alternatives/ non-opioid analgesic options.
- Explain what to do if the prescriber notices aberrant behavior/opioid diversion.
Speaker Biography:
Veronica Magda is a Physician Assistant at the Cleveland Clinic with 10 years experience where she independently provides expert consultation and guidance on the management of the oftentimes complex inpatient chronic pain patients with wide ranging medical comorbidities.
While ensuring all of her patients get personalized pain management care, she has also been dedicated to delivering education and training to pre-clinical and clinical physician assistant students, facilitating the on-boarding of new physician assistants and has also presented a multitude of lectures on various pain management-related topics to wide-ranging audiences including community based education on addiction, vocational education to middle and high school students, guest lecturing to physician assistant students, presented to her peers in a multitude of settings from specialty grand rounds to numerous pharmacology conferences to speaking at the annual Cleveland Clinic Pain symposiums on multiple occasions. Her passion for teaching has garnered Veronica with the prestigious Cleveland Clinic Physician Assistant Services Educator of the Year award in 2019.
When Veronica’s not engaged in educating, she enjoys listening to live music from a variety of genres and is currently teaching herself to play the guitar and the piano.
