Treatment Regimens for Atopic Dermatitis

Presented by Maggie McKernan, PA-C, Apex Skin and Andrew Baker, PA-C, West Ohio Dermatology

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the pathophysiology of atopic dermatitis and the corresponding mechanism of actions of related medications.
  • Identify and summarize indications and contraindications for different classes of drugs used in atopic dermatitis.
  • Decide when to treat and when to refer.
  • Describe potential side effects and adverse reactions as well as have strategies to mitigate risks including monitoring requirements and patient education.
  • Formulate appropriate treatment strategies for patients with atopic dermatitis.

Speaker Biographies:

Mc Kernan Margaret HeadshotMaggie McKernan, PA-C, is a experienced dermatology PA based in Cleveland, Ohio. With over five years of experience in the field, she has developed a specialized focus on skin cancer, acne, psoriasis, eczema, and other cutaneous conditions. Maggie holds a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Physician Assistant Science degree, both earned at Gannon University in Pennsylvania.

In addition to her clinical practice, Maggie is actively involved in professional organizations and education within her field. She currently serves as the President of the Ohio Society of Dermatology PAs, and as the Vice-chair of the National Society of Dermatology PAs (SDPA) CME committee. Furthermore, she is a senior delegate for the SDPA at the AAPA House of Delegates.

Maggie is also committed to sharing her expertise through education and has served as a lecturer at a number of conferences and courses, including the annual PSPA conference, OAPA conference, Diversity in Dermatology Conference, and SDPA courses. In her free time, she enjoys playing volleyball, spending time with family, and exploring Cleveland with her husband.

 

Baker Andrew HeadshotAndrew Baker, PA-C, MBA is a practicing Physician Assistant in a medical and surgical Dermatology office located in Ohio. He graduated from the University of Findlay Physician Assistant Program in May 2012. He was class President and a member of the National Honor Society. Andrew has obtained his MBA in 2020 from the University of Findlay. He has published multiple peer reviewed articles and in is the current Director at Large for the Society of Dermatology PAs, a national organization with over 4,700 members.

Andrew has extensive experience with inflammatory skin disease diagnosis, treatment and management. He utilizes the most innovative technologies to provide precision patient care. He works with numerous pharmaceutical companies and healthcare organizations tirelessly to improve the lives of patients with inflammatory skin disease.
