"Neuroendocrine Zebras: Pheochromocytomas and Paragangliomas" with Lisa Ward, PA-C: 2024 OAPA Annual Conference Speaker Feature

PAs have a need to know a menagerie of medical conditions.

Join us at the 2024 OAPA Annual Conference to learn about "Neuroendocrine Zebras: Pheochromocytomas and Paragangliomas."

Lisa Ward headshotLisa Ward, PA-C, Ohio State University/James Cancer Hospital, will cover this important topic during her on-demand session at the upcoming 2024 OAPA Annual Conference. She will define the difference between pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas, describe how to appropriately work up pheochromocytomas/paragangliomas, identify how to appropriately alpha-block patients with pheochromocytomas/paragangliomas for surgery, and discuss other types of tumors associated with pheochromocytomas/paragangliomas.

We recently caught up with Lisa to ask her more about this important session she is planning.

OAPA:
Why are you excited to present to the OAPA audience on this topic?

Lisa:
My world of neuroendocrinology/oncology is truly a zebra in a world of horses. When I worked in family medicine (prior to my current position), I would rarely think about possible endocrine etiologies in my differential diagnosis. The conditions I treat now are rare, but need to be considered for certain symptoms. I want to get the word out to my colleagues about neuroendocrine tumors so they can have them on their “radar” when seeing patients. Hopefully, after listening to my lecture, providers will feel more comfortable knowing they can start at least the initial work up for these tumors should the need arise.

OAPA:
What do you think might surprise people about this topic?

Lisa:
That pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas are basically the same type of tumor but are just found in different places in the body.

OAPA:
Why do you love being a PA?

Lisa:
I have a good work-life balance. I can take care of patients but still have time to be with my family. As a PA, I usually have more time to spend with the patient than the physicians, so I can really connect with them.

OAPA:
Tell us something about your life outside of work.

Lisa:
I love boating on my pontoon and spending as much time as possible on the lake!
